Harper Bishop impresses in opening week scoring a game high 20 points for the Shining Force, but the NDN Gunners take top honors with an impressive team win over Healthy Buffalo.
Buffalo, NY- After weeks of anticipation the first ever Healthy Buffalo Women’s League tipped off on Wednesday night. There was a great turnout as six teams joined the league. In the first game of action the Geriatric Lady Bears took on the Shining Force. The fans were somewhat perplexed the their name as the Lady Bears appeared to be one of the youngest teams in the league. Team Shining Force was led by Harper Bishop who had a tremendous performance leading the team with 20 points. It was all knotted up at the end of the first half, but in the second half, without a single reserve, the Shining Force ran out of steam. Ona Holliday (20 points) and Sara Guppenberger (15 points) led the Geriatric Lady Bears in scoring while picking up the 50-36 win in opening week.
In the second game of action the NDN Gunners took on team Healthy Buffalo. The Healthy Buffalo team has the added responsibility of carrying the weight of the entire organization in the league. Jazmyn Haywood led a spirited Healthy Buffalo team with nine points, but the NDN Gunners stole the show on opening night. After every missed shot from Healthy Buffalo, they kicked the ball out for quick outlet passes and raced down the court on the attack. They played well together and had a balanced attack. Alyssa Snyder led all scorers with 18 points in the 64-28 win.
In the final game of the night the Toon Squad took on the Lemon Drops. The Lemon Drops jumped out to a big lead by halftime, led behind Ashley Kimble who scored 11 of her 20 points in the first half. Brianna Trapper made some nice plays in the first half, including a nice basket while being fouled, giving her an opportunity for a three point play. The Lemon Drops continued to build on their lead in the second half finishing off the Toon Squad 58-23, while joining the Geriatric Lady Bears and the NDN Gunners at 1-0 in the standings.
The action continues next Wednesday at 7:35 pm. Follow Healthy Buffalo on facebook for additional pictures and coverage of league action!
