White Men Can’t Jump knock off the VeryAggressiveGuys to become last undefeated team in the West. Ball So Hard tops Norfolk N’ Chance in the East to lock up their first win.
Buffalo, NY- White Men Can’t Jump had their first opportunity to truly be tested this past Saturday as they took on the Kronies Jamfest 3 defending champion VeryAggressiveGuys. They wasted no time in establishing their presence by blazing out to a quick 13 point lead. Scott Grandits had another excellent game leading White Men Can’t Jump with 19 points. The VeryAggressiveGuys fought back in the second half, but it wasn’t enough as White Men Can’t Jump pulled out the 57-53 point victory and potentially established themselves as the team to beat in the West.
In game two the Monstars played Gary Lee and Victorious Secret. Victorious Secret blew this one open early behind the one-two punch of Shawn Satarian (21 points) and Mark Ward (19 points). James Kim (17 points) led a second half comeback but it was too little too late as Victorious Secret wrapped up their first win, 75-60.
In game three IMPROV battled The U.H. in an instant BSWA classic. This one was a tough, testy low scoring affair throughout, with big man Lucas Pichette (15 points) and Darrik Bloomfield (15 points) doing most of the scoring for their respective teams. IMPROV appeared to have this one locked up in the final minute with a number of opportunities to put The U.H. away, but they couldn’t finish them off and captain Mike Capuana would make them pay. With eight seconds remaining and a two point deficit Capuana launched an NBA range three-pointer and swished it nothing but net to finish off their come from behind victory, 41-40.
In the 6pm game Healthy Buffalo played an inspired Flint Tropics team, who were motivated by the return of their captain Nick Pfohman who suffered a sever ankle sprain in week three. Tom Smith led the Tropics with 17 points, while Nick Pfohman (13 points) and Justin Grote (12 points) balanced out the attack. Healthy Buffalo struggled to get their offense going, managing just eight first half points. Final Score: Flint Tropics 66, Healthy Buffalo 46.
It was a battle of the Brian’s in the 7pm game. Brian Walter (28 points) was on fire from downtown carrying a shorthanded Court Justice team with six first half three pointers. Brian Jasinski had a career game on the other side of the ball for the Hoosiers scoring a career high 28 points, but it wouldn’t be enough to make up for the absence of emotional court general and captain Marc Antecki who missed the game for personal reasons. Court Justice stays in the hunt with the 75-65 point victory.
Next up was undefeated Swoopin’ In On Ya Girl who squared off against a retooled AXA squad that was looking to deliver Swoopin’ their first loss of the season. Des Randall did his part for AXA, scoring a career high 30 points with 12 of those points coming from the free throw line. Swoopin’ captain John Papincak was outraged at the referees, in what he perceived as a deliberate attempt on their part to hand this game to AXA. While AXA was playing it’s second game without their All-Star forward Shane Canahai, Swoopin’ was nearly at full force including big man Joe Montroy who made his second start of the season and helped contain AXA’s Jeremy Kelley. In the end Swoopin’ just had one too many weapons and kept their winning streak alive with the 84-77 point victory.
In the 9pm slot was another of the three remaining undefeated teams in the East as Lux took on I R Colludge Edjukated. Lux forward Fran Snyder made his season debut in this one and picked up right where he left off in Kronies Jamfest 2011, scoring a game high 29 points, which was also matched by Danny Gilbert, who had a monster second half knocking down 6-7 three-pointers. I R Colludge Edjukated kept this one close in the first half with a fast paced offensive attack, but couldn’t keep up in the second half, falling 99 to 81.
In the final game of the night Norfolk N’ Chance and Ball So Hard took to the courts knowing someone was walking away with their first win of the season. Norfolk N’ Chance got off to a hot start in this one taking a four point lead into the second half. Corey Kadish had an excellent night scoring 12 points to balance out a well-rounded game. As time wound down in the second Ball So Hard put on the full court press and forced a number of turnovers leading easy layups on the other end. Tito Harris led Ball So Hard with 13 points and helped deliver Ball So Hard their first win of the season 56-54.
