Victorious Secret knocks off the last undefeated team in the West, while a surging Norfolk N’ Chance slays another giant with big win over Lux.
Buffalo, NY- There was some big time basketball played at the Knights this Sunday as Kronies Jamfest 4 officially entered the home stretch, including shocking upsets, massive individual performances, thundering slam dunks, and a tightening at both the top of the playoff race and the scoring title in each division.
In game one a confident, undefeated White Men Can’t Jump team ran straight into a buzz-saw as they took the court against Victorious Secret. Shawn Satarian led Victorious Secret with 31 points and seven assists as picked apart White Men Can’t Jump’s defense. Franklin Jackson also chipped in 12 points, dominating the inside while playing his best game of the season. The win puts Victorious Secret just one game out of the fifth and final playoff spot in the West. Final Score: Victorious Secret 71, White Men Can’t Jump 61.
Dave Laudero of Healthy Buffalo had a good feeling leading up to tip-off, noticing that the Very Aggressive Guys have looked vulnerable the past couple weeks, while Healthy Buffalo was just starting to gel. As the first half got under way it appeared as if Laudero might be right. Laudero dropped nine points in the first half, taking Healthy Buffalo into the second half with only a 21-20 point deficit. In the second half however, Jake Walkow decided it was time to take over. Jake Walkow ran off a quick 16 points in the second while leading the Very Aggressive Guys to a dominating second half performance and a convincing 69-32 point win.
Next up was Nick Pfohman and the Flint Tropics who have been quietly knocking off one team after another each week. This week they would have their hands full with PMB big man Darren Kresge who were looking to get their season back on track. Kresge has a big time first half performance to keep PMB in the game, but the one-two punch of Nick Pfohman (24 points) and Don Sheldon (27 points) was too much for PMB to handle. Don Sheldon took control of the scoring title in the West while leading the Flint Tropics to victory, 64-56.
In the 6pm game an injury stricken The U.H. headed into a tough match-up against the Monstars without it’s two leading scorers who are missing extensive time with injuries. James Kim came out on fire, looking to capitalize on a shorthanded The U.H. team. He knocked down the Monstars first three shots of the game and seem poised to lead the Monstars to their first win of the season. The Capuana brothers had other plans, scoring 40 of their teams 54 points and leading The U.H. to victory 54-35, while holding on to the fifth and final spot in the West.
There was some big time drama leading up to the match-up between Sponge Bob Square Pants and the Hoosiers. According to reports, Hoosiers starting forward Bryan Dorothy was let go to make space for newcomer Rob Maklin in a controversial roster shakeup intended to give the Hoosiers the firepower to make one last push for the playoffs. Marc Antecki came out on fire in this one, showing glimpses of his season two performance when he brought home the scoring title, leading the Hoosiers with 13 first half points while leading the Hoosiers to a 31-25 point lead at the break. Sponge Bob Square Pants fought back in the second to force the game to overtime, where they squeezed out the victory behind a monster game by Jon Burgio who scored a season high 33 points and left Sponge Bob Square Pants as the last remaining undefeated team. Final Score: Sponge Bob 68, Hoosiers 63.
It was a battle of the titans in the Week 6 Game of the Week as Court Justice squared off against John Papincak and Swoopin’ In On Ya Girl. Swoopin’ jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back in this one as Court Justice looked surprisingly outmatched. Ed Stephens did his best for Court Justice matching a season high with 25 points, but he couldn’t get it done alone as the Court Justice offense looked out of sync. John Papincak (19 points) put the exclamation point on this one with a nice two-handed dunk, carrying Swoopin’ In On Ya Girl to the 78-70 victory and keeping them within a half game of first in the East.
In the 9pm game AXA took on a hungry Ball So Hard squad. This one was a close, physical game throughout. Des Randall (17 points) picked up the offensive load for AXA in the absence of team leader Steve Frettold and leading scorer Mike Ridge. Ball So Hard played what was perhaps their best game of the season, distributing the ball and playing good, aggressive team defense. Tito Harris (11 points) hit a big three-pointer down the stretch, but it was answered right back by Des Randall. AXA squeezed out the 58-55 point win in this one, keeping their playoff hopes alive.
In the final game of the night Norfolk N’ Chance played Lux, while looking for their second consecutive win against Eastern Division powerhouses. Corey Kadish brought the fire and intensity to this one for Norfolk N’ Chance, while Dean Antalik (15 points) and Jon Plail (20 points) did the bulk of the scoring. Charlie Comerford (17 points) led Lux in scoring while having his way on the inside in the first half, but appeared to tweak his back which slowed him down in the second half. Norfolk N’ Chance seized the opportunity by picking up the tempo, highlighted by a big time display of ups by Jon Plail who threw down a nice one-handed fast break dunk to set the tone. Dan Picciula protege Joe Northrup put on an admirable performance while being called up for a shorthanded Lux, but it wasn’t enough as Norfolk N’ Chance continued their late season run with the 58-50 point victory.
